1. What is an Optometrist?

Optometrist is a healthcare professional who takes care of vision care to the healthiness of eyes. An optometrist may perform examinations for your vision and diagnose any eye problems. Any eye problems that require surgery is performed by opthalmologist, and this is the main difference between an optometrist and an opthalmologist.

2. When do you see optometrist? 

Although minor eye pain or vision defect can happen from time to time, it is still better to consult an optometrist if you experience frequent vision problems. Here are a few signs of when to see an optometrist: 

  • frequent headaches - one of the signs of deteroriated eyesights is frequent headaches 
  • blurry vision 
  • pain in the eye - although pain in the eye is sometimes harmless and indicate that you lack sleep, it can also be a sign for a more serious problem 

3. Are children also susceptible to vision problems?

Yes, vision problems affect people of all ages. There are several signs that may indicate vision problems in kids: 

  • constant eye rubbing 
  • squinting
  • very sensitive to light 
  • frequent headaches 
  • difficulty reading
  • redness of the eyes 
  • white pupil

It is always best to take your children for routine eye exams with an optometrist to ensure vision problems can be taken care of at early age. 

4. How does an optometrist diagnose vision problem?

The most common eye tests that an optometrist perform are: 

  • eye muscle test - you may be asked to move your eyes following an object or a light. This is to check whether there is a weakness in your eye muscles 
  • visual acuity test - each eye is tested separately and you will be asked to read letters  
  • refraction test - this test allows optometrist to prescribe the right lens for your eyeglass 
  • peripheral visual field test - this test lets optometrist determine your visual field size 

5. What to expect during a visit to optometrist?

During your vist to an optometrist, you will be asked general information about your vision and what you're currently experiencing. Your doctor will then suggested you for an eye exams and make a diganosis based on the exams. 

For a routine visit, you may be asked more about the changes in your vision. Additionally, you might also undergo vision screenings to check your eye health in general.
