The debate about which one is better; regular soda or diet soda for our health has been the main topic of discussion for years. There are pros and cons of these drinks, but before anyone can conclude whether one is better than the other, we have to recognize that all soda drinks don’t provide any nutritional value whatsoever to your body. That’s the reason why doctors never recommend soda.

Though soda doesn’t have nutritional value and probably only does harm to your health, it is one of the tastiest, affordable and most refreshing beverages available. It is why most doctors or dieticians will tell you that drink soda one every once in a while won’t hurt.
Moderation is the most important thing to keep in mind when choosing between diet soda and regular soda because too much of either version won’t be good for you. So before we can make any conclusions about which soda is better than the other for health, let’s go through the pros and cons of both.
Pros and Cons of Regular Soda
Regular soda contains real sugar. To be exact, 39 grams of it in can size (350 ml coca-cola), that’s 9 teaspoons of sugar. As advised by The American Heart Association (AHA), the average woman should only consume 6 teaspoons of added sugar while men can have 9. This is clearly far too much sugar for the average person.
Regular soda also contains real carbohydrates. It means that excessive consumption will ultimately make you gain weight. To sum it up, it is bad to drink soda because it is high in sugar and calorically dense.
Regular soda is also one of the worst causes of tooth decay. Tooth decay happens when your teeth rot and develop cavities (small holes inside the teeth) due to overeating sugar. With the amount of sugar in the form of liquid in regular soda, this makes it one of the worst drinks for dental health.
Pros and Cons of Diet Soda
Diet soda is extremely popular as it provides almost the same flavour profile as regular soda. It is also just as available and affordable as regular soda. The main appeal of diet soda is that it does not contain any real sugar. It allows the drink to be labelled as 0 calories.
Because diet soda doesn’t contain calories, it’s hard actually to gain weight by drinking them. With dieting factors being a main stake in the soda war, many companies will sell diet versions alongside regular soda as they know most people will buy into these benefits.
We need to understand that there are pros and cons for diet sodas as well. Yes, there is 0 sugar, which means that it doesn’t contain calories, but diet sodas are notorious for having lots of added chemicals and artificial sweeteners.
A negative effect of diet soda is that it leaves the body craving for real sugar. It can lead to overeating or poor eating habits. Even though they don’t automatically make people gain weight, they can cause sugar cravings and addiction. As sugar is known to damage your teeth, diet soda is often seen as a solution to regular soda for this matter.
However, the chemicals and artificial sugar in diet sodas are known to damage the protective properties of your teeth by damaging the surface layer. And just like regulate soda, diet soda does not provide any nutritional value for the body. If anything, the substances and artificial chemicals can only harm your body.
The Final Verdict: Diet Soda or Regular Soda?
The debate surrounding which type of soda you should have will always be existent. That’s because neither is actually better than the other for your health. When you compare two things that bring no benefit to your health, it can turn into a hard debate. But the final verdict as you’ve probably already heard before is not to drink either.
Both have lots of cons and not many pros. It’s always better to limit your intake of any soda or replace it with other sweet drinks that provide some nutritional value such as fruit juice.
