If you haven’t tried castor oil to maintain strong and healthy hair as well as clear, moist and healthy skin, then you should seriously consider it. Particularly in the UAE, keeping healthy and strong skin and hair can be hard as the weather and air quality can damage it. If your hair care products don’t seem to be able to keep up with the daily toils of the harsh environment of the city, maybe it’s time to start using castor oil for hair.
What is Castor Oil?
Castor oil is a vegetable oil that comes from the seeds of a plant called Ricinus communis. Castor oil is processed by cold pressing castor seeds before heat is applied. Castor oil is not an edible oil but is primarily used as an ingredient for cosmetic products. It is also known to be used as an effective laxative. What makes castor oil great are its natural anti-inflammatory properties as well as being a great natural moisturizer.
Castor Oil for Skin
Fighting the development of acne – Castor oil is popular for facial routines as it contains antibacterial properties that are great at unclogging pores, and removing bacteria from the surface of your skin. Accompanied by a skincare routine that works for you, castor oil will help to remove and prevent the development of acne, blackheads and small blemishes from your face and neck.
Minimize wrinkles – Whether your face or other parts of your body, castor oil can help to minimize the appearance and slow down the development of wrinkles on your face. Castor oil contains lots of antioxidants that help to fight free radicals in your body. Free radicals are responsible for accelerating the rate ageing process in the appearance of skin.
Reduce puffy or inflamed skin – If you have sensitive or are prone to having red skin, castor oil can help to reduce the swelling. If you have puffy eyes or inflamed acne, the anti-inflammatory properties in castor oil can certainly help the healing process and overall appearance.
Moisturizing – Caster oil will help your skin look and feel, clean, naturally shiny as well as flexible and supple. Unlike other oils, castor oils can moisturize the skin without creating acne. Having overall moisturized skin also prevents and slows down the development of wrinkles.
Castor Oil for Hair
Gives Healthy, Shiny Hair – Castor oil can greatly benefit your hair as it is rich in antioxidants. Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid as well as omega-3 fatty acids. These are the essential properties that will improve the strength, health, and appearance of hair. When massaged onto the scalp, it naturally moisturizes and conditions your hair while also increasing blood circulation to improve hair growth.
- Prevents hair fall
When applied to your hair care routine once a week as a hair mask, castor oil can help to prevent hair loss. This is because castor oil naturally strengthens hair to its roots. Not only will the appearance of your hair look shiny and healthy, but it will also maintain it in the long term.
How to Castor Oil in a Routine
Castor oil will usually be quite thick, so it isn’t very easy to rub into your skin or hair. So it is best for use when mixed with a carrier oil with a ratio of 1:1. Carrier oils that will help to make castor oil more liquid can be coconut, almond or olive oil.
For Hair: After castor, oil is mixed with a carrier oil, rub the mixture into your hair and sculpt. Pay particular attention in areas of your hair that are dry, irritable or damaged. After this process, let it sit on your hair for 5-10 minutes before washing off with a good shampoo.
For Skin: After following your regular skincare routine of exfoliating and cleansing, follow this up by applying castor oil to your face as a mask. It is not essential to mix it with a carrier oil unless it is too thick. Leave it on for 10 minutes before washing off and moisturizing. You can also leave it overnight as a mask for full effect.
Things to Keep in Mind
Although castor oil is an excellent option for better hair and skin, you should still stick to your regular products that are already working as well. If you have extremely sensitive or a skin condition that does not react well to unfamiliar ingredients, it is best to consult with your doctor before trying castor oil. If you notice that castor oil does not improve your skin and hair condition or may even make it worse, stop using it immediately and consult with your doctor. Everyone’s skin is different. What may work for one person may not work for the other.
