Fatigue can be the result of many different things. It may be that you aren’t living a healthy lifestyle, not eating right, not getting quality sleep but can also be a medical health concern. Don’t be confused with being tired and fatigued.

If you are resting well, getting quality sleep, staying hydrated and eating correctly, you shouldn’t feel fatigued. If you are doing all those things but can’t seem to shake off your fatigue as it begins to affect your wellbeing, then you will need to take action.

  • Lack of fluid intake. Dehydration is one of the main reasons why people may feel more tired than usual. Dehydration leaves the body without the energy for muscle, bones and joint function as well as depriving the brain of electrolytes. Without electrolytes from water, cognitive abilities such as memory, perception, and judgment will decline. This can also significantly affect mood.
  • Lack of sleep. This is one of the main causes of fatigue as well as worsening its symptoms. No matter what lifestyle or daily structure you have, sleep is probably the most important component in the 24 hours of your day. If you are staying hydrated, exercising, eating well but not sleeping enough, you will still have fatigue. 
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Dr. Khan, a rheumatologist at MediClinic City Hospital Dubai, defines Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), as “a long-term debilitating illness dominated by fatigue, muscular and joint pain, flu-like symptoms, poor concentration and headaches”. It is believed to be a rare condition that very few people are born with. Those who suffer from CFS are usually given exercise programs and therapy from medical professionals. 
  • Iron-deficiency anaemia. This is a condition developed when iron is lacking in the body, causing a reduction in red blood cells. People with iron deficiency generally lack energy, feel excessive tiredness, and can also feel weak, dizzy and faint. Women are generally more likely to have iron deficiency due to blood loss in period cycles.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle. If you are a person who doesn’t engage in physical activity and spends most of your time being seated, this can cause a drop in serotonin levels, leaving you with less and less energy by the day.
  • Depression. Depression causes serotonin levels in the body to drop. Serotonin is the feel-good hormone and can boost your mood as well as give you more energy. As depression stops you from physical exercise, your body, in general, will be producing less energy to do anything.  

How to Decrease Fatigue

  • Sleep Better. Getting enough hours of sleep is the first thing you need to do if fatigue is a problem. The recommended amount for the average adult is 7-9 hours. Also, focus on sleep quality and not just sleep amount. Get yourself comfortable by adjusting the temperature and lighting in your room. Don’t eat or drink too much if it will make you wake up and go to the restroom in the middle of the night.
  • Destress and Unwind. If you’re at the office or home, find a 30 minute to 1-hour timeframe where you can focus on relaxing yourself. This will help to preserve and build up your energy mentally and physically. You can do this by having a power nap, meditation or drink tea while you tend to a hobby.
  • Exercise More. Try to incorporate more physical activity, either by playing sports or walking the dog. This will also help your body to produce more serotonin levels which will ultimately increase your energy.
  • Drink and Eat Better. What you put in your body will ultimately determine how much energy you have. By eating foods that are nutrient-rich and healthy, your body will not only feel better but will have more fuel to run on. Drinking enough water replenishes tired joints, muscles and also improves brain functioning. 
  • Gain Weight Or Lose Weight. Try to reach a bodyweight that suits you best. If you are underweight, gain more. If you are overweight, lose more. When your physique is healthy and strong, you’ll have more energy and less joint and muscle complications. This can be incorporated by exercise, diet and a healthier lifestyle. 
  • Visit Your Doctor. If none of the above points seems to be working on your fatigue levels, speak with your medical practitioner as there may be a more serious underlying issue behind your fatigue. By visiting your doctor, they will be able to diagnose what the main issue is and help provide a tailor-made solution to your fatigue problems.
